APPLY FOR A MARRIAGE LICENSE IN NYS
All persons who intend to be married in NYS must obtain a marriage license from a town or city clerk in NYS. Applicants must apply in person and making an appointment is highly recommended. Applicants must provide proof of identity, usually in the form of a driver’s license or a passport. Applicants must also provide the clerk with an original or certified copy of a birth certificate. If either applicant has previously been married, they must provide the clerk with documentation showing the disposition of said marriage, whether a divorce decree, a Certificate of Dissolution of marriage, or a death certificate. The fee is $40.00 (cash or check only). The license will become valid twenty-four hours from the time it was obtained and is valid for sixty days.
OBTAIN A COPY OF A MARRIAGE RECORD
You must be one of the applicants listed on the marriage record and must have obtained the license in the Town. You must complete the application which can be downloaded here and include payment in the amount of $10.00 for each certified copy requested and a photocopy if applying by mail or an original of either a driver’s license or a state issued non-driver’s identification.
WHO CAN PERFORM A MARRIAGE CEREMONY
To be valid, a marriage ceremony must be performed by any of the individuals specified in Section 11 of the NYS Domestic Relations Law. Please visit www.health.ny.gov for more details.
OBTAIN A BUILDING PERMIT

APPLY FOR A PARKING PERMIT FOR PERSON WITH SEVERE DISABILITIES
Applicants must fill out Department of Motor Vehicle form MV-664.1 and submit proper medical certification. Forms are available from the Town Clerk’s Office, the Department of Motor Vehicles or in some cases your physician’s office. A photocopy of your driver’s license must be submitted with each application.
REQUEST DOCUMENTS UNDER THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION LAW (FOIL REQUEST)
The town requires that a request be made in writing. A Request for Examination of Records can be downloaded from the Town Clerk’s page.
DISPOSE OF GARBAGE
Greene County operates a transfer station facility on Lustig Road which is off of Rte. 23A between the two villages. Please contact them at (518) 263-4807 with any questions.
You may also hire a private contractor to pick up your garbage.

OBTAIN A COPY OF A DEATH RECORD
The Town Clerk’s Office has death records on file for persons who died in the Town of Hunter, exclusive of the Villages of Hunter and Tannersville. The person applying for a copy of a death certificate must be the spouse, parent, child of the deceased or other person who has a documented legal right or claim, documented medical need or NYS Court Order. If you are requesting a certificate you must complete the application which can be downloaded here. Include a check or money order in the amount of $10.00 for each certified copy requested and a photocopy if applying by mail or an original if applying in person of one of the following:
- State issued driver’s license
- State issued non-driver’s id card
- US Military photo id card
- Passport
OBTAIN A COPY OF A BIRTH RECORD
The Town Clerk’s Office has birth certificates on file for persons born in the Town of Hunter, exclusive of the Villages of Hunter and Tannersville. Only the person named on the birth certificate or the parents of the person named on the birth certificate are eligible to receive a copy. A spouse, child or other person may only obtain a copy of a birth certificate with a NYS Court Order. If you are requesting a certificate you must complete the application which can be downloaded here. Include a check or money order in the amount of $10.00 for each certified copy requested and a photocopy if applying by mail or an original if applying in person of one of the following:
- State issued driver’s license
- State issued non-driver’s id card
- US Military photo id card
- Passport
