The Town of Hunter is sharing two important traffic advisories impacting local travel in the coming days. Please read carefully and plan accordingly:
Platte Clove Mountain Road – One-Lane Restriction on Historic Bridge
The Greene County Highway Department has officially designated the historic stone arch bridge at the top of Platte Clove Mountain Road (Back Mountain Road / Town of Hunter Route 9) as a narrow, one-lane crossing. This measure is being taken to preserve and protect the bridge ahead of a major renovation project scheduled for 2026.
Motorists are reminded that Platte Clove Mountain Road is a restricted, seasonal mountain road, not suitable for large commercial vehicles. The following vehicles are prohibited at all times:
-
Box trucks
-
Tractor trailers
-
Buses
The road is narrow, winding, and not designed to accommodate large vehicles. Misuse contributes to safety hazards and accelerates deterioration of both the road and historic bridge. These restrictions are in place for the safety of all travelers and the preservation of this scenic and historic route.
Route 23A Bridge Over Kaaterskill Falls – Temporary Closure to Large Trucks
The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has announced that the bridge carrying State Route 23A over Spruce Creek (Kaaterskill Falls) will be closed to all vehicles with more than two axles from:
Monday, August 11 at 7:00 a.m. through Saturday, August 16 at 5:30 p.m.
This temporary closure is necessary to allow critical bridge repairs. Access for emergency vehicles will be maintained.
A signed detour route will direct large vehicle traffic to use State Routes 32, 23, and 296. Motorists should expect travel delays and are advised to plan extra time for travel. All construction activities are weather dependent and subject to change.
